From the Foreword:
So I am writing this book in the hopes that I can convince you that our religion is failing us. Because our religion is failing us, our spirituality is diminishing. Because our spirituality is low, our culture is deteriorating. The deterioration of our culture is leading to the problems that exist in Black society today.
Chapter 3, page 33
When I look around in many of the Black communities, I see a church on almost every corner. Many times these are the neighborhoods with the most crime and poverty. It is so bad that people have begun to joke about it. The joke is that you can tell a Black neighborhood by counting the number of churches, liquor stores and gun shops on each corner. Churches, liquor stores and gun shops, do they have something in common? Is there a connection that binds these three together? Is there a deeper meaning that we should be looking for in this apparent association?
